      What the parameters mean

UTM parameters are small tags added to the end of a link. When someone clicks it, Google Analytics 4 and most other analytics tools read the tags and file the visit under that source, medium and campaign. The page itself doesn’t change.

      utm_source
Where the visitor came from: a site, app, newsletter or printed piece. e.g. instagram, google, newsletter
      utm_medium
The type of channel the link was shared through. e.g. social, cpc, email, print
      utm_campaign
The specific promotion, launch or event the link belongs to. e.g. spring_sale, grand_opening
      utm_term
Optional. Usually the paid search keyword that showed the ad. e.g. emergency_plumber
      utm_content
Optional. Separates links that share a campaign, such as two ads or a header and a footer link. e.g. video_ad, footer_link
      utm_id
Optional. A campaign ID. In Google Analytics 4, use the same ID as in any campaign data you upload. e.g. spring_2026, 12345

Google Analytics treats tag values as case sensitive, so “Facebook” and “facebook” show up as two different sources. Pick one spelling and reuse it. Tags only belong on links that point to your site from somewhere else, such as posts, ads, emails and print, not on links between your own pages.
